      Marttiini have been making knives in Rovaniemi, in Finnish Lapland, since 1928. The house pattern is the puukko — a plain, thin, flat-ground blade with a barrel handle and no guard — and it remains one of the best general field knives you can carry.

      Which knife

      • Lynx 121 and Lynx 129 — the traditional puukko. Light, thin behind the edge and easy to sharpen. A good all-round belt knife for the hill and the woods.
      • Condor Skinner — a dedicated skinning blade with the belly you want for working a hide off without holing it.
      • Lumberjack and Lumberjack Antler, and the Condor Timberjack with leather sheath — carbon steel fixed blades. Carbon takes a keener edge than stainless and touches up quickly on a stone, but it will rust if you put it away wet. Dry it and wipe it with oil after every use, particularly after gralloching.
      • Filleting knives — Classic in 10cm and 15cm, Superflex 19, and a 7.5in Basic. The flexible blades are for fish; the stiffer ones are more use on a bird or a rabbit.

      Carrying one

      A fixed blade needs good reason to be carried in a public place. In the field, with the rifle, the game bag or the larder kit, that is straightforward; in town it is not. Sheath it properly rather than dropping it loose in a rucksack.
