Scope-mounted or barrel-mounted
A scope-mounted lamp — the Lightforce Pred3x kit, the Clulite White Eye, the Richter Optik kit — puts the beam where the crosshair is, so what you illuminate is what you are pointed at. That is the whole argument for it, and it is a good one for anyone shooting foxes alone without a lamper.
The Ledlenser TAC6R and TAC7R sets are tactical torch kits with a mount and pressure switch, and work as a lighter alternative. The Bisley T3 mini is a compact torch for close work rather than a spotting lamp.
The Clulite Trio-Pro comes with three interchangeable LED heads, which is the practical way to change colour and beam pattern without buying a second lamp.
Infrared illuminators
The Cluson Sneakybeam is an IR illuminator, not a white lamp. It is for use with digital night vision, which needs IR light to see by. It does nothing for a thermal unit — thermal reads heat and does not use illumination at all. Check which you are running before you order.
Practical notes
Recoil kills cheap lamps. Anything mounted forward of the action takes the full whack of every shot, so mount solidly and check the fixings periodically. Match the beam to the ground: a tight beam throws further across a big field, a wider one is easier to work a hedgerow with. And keep the switch where your hand naturally sits — a pressure pad you have to reach for costs you the shot.
