Carrying: slings
A sling is worth more thought than it usually gets. Width is the variable that decides comfort on a long day: a narrow strap cuts in once you have been walking with a moderated rifle for two hours, while a wide padded sling like the Beretta Neo spreads the load. If you carry a rifle up hills, look at a rucksack-style carry such as the Niggeloh Titan II, which takes the weight off one shoulder entirely and leaves both hands free — the difference on steep ground is considerable. The Napier Apex Sidewinder adaptor is for fitting a sling where the stud arrangement does not otherwise allow it.
Transporting: slips and cases
Three broad categories, and they are not interchangeable:
- Slips — soft, quick, for getting between the vehicle and the peg. Parker-Hale leather slips are the traditional choice.
- Soft cases — Beretta Uniform Pro EVO and similar, padded, for general transport in the back of a vehicle.
- Hard cases — MTM Case-Gard double scoped rifle cases and Nuprol hard cases for anything that will be handled by someone other than you, or that carries an optic you cannot afford to have knocked off zero.
Before you buy a case
Measure the gun as you actually carry it — with the moderator, bipod and scope fitted, not the bare barrel length off the certificate. Cases are the single most returned item in this category and it is almost always because the buyer measured the rifle and forgot the moderator.
