Waterproof Jackets

    Filter

Waterproof jackets and smocks for stalking, keepering, rough shooting and wildfowling, plus the wax and wool coats people reach for when the forecast is wet but the day is slow.

      Membrane shells

Deerhunter's Deer-Tex runs through the PRO Gamekeeper jacket, short jacket and smock in Peat and Turf, the Survivor rain jacket and poncho in Realtree Timber and the Excape rain jacket. SwedTeam cover the Scandinavian end with the Ultra Pro M, Titan Pro M and Ridge Pro M. Seeland's Hawker Shell II, Taiga and Key-Point Active, Härkila's Orton Tech HWS, ShooterKing's Greenland and Hoggs of Fife's Ballater fill in around them.

      Smocks

The Hoggs of Fife Struther, the Game Technical Apparel Stalking Smock, the Jack Pyke Galbraith and the Deerhunter PRO Gamekeeper Smock. A smock has no full-length zip, so it is quieter and better sealed across the chest, but it cannot be vented in a hurry or pulled off over a rifle sling.

      Wax and wool

Game Technical Apparel wax jackets and the long Stockman cape, and Swanndri wool anoraks. Wax and wool shed rain and stay quiet in cover, but they are not waterproof in the technical sense; on a long wet day a taped membrane is the safer bet.

      Choosing

If you climb in it, look for pit zips and a cut that leaves room for a mid-layer, because a fully sealed shell will keep the rain out and still soak you from the inside. If you sit in it, in a high seat or on a flight pond, quietness and a long back matter more than breathability. Women's cuts include the Deerhunter Lady Gabby smock and Lady Ann Extreme, the Seeland Hawker Advance, the Härkila Retrieve Lady and the Game Technical Apparel Elise.
