The Prandi Cooper's Axe is a cooper's pattern hand tool, built to the specification barrel-makers have relied on for shaping and truing staves. The head is forged from carbon steel with a polished, hardened blade that holds a keen edge, and it fits onto the handle via a conical eye — the traditional wedge-free fixing, where the handle is driven through a tapered socket rather than secured with a metal wedge. At 700 grams (1.55lb), the head is light enough for controlled, one-handed use while still carrying enough weight to work cleanly. The handle is 15.75 inches (40cm) of varnished beech, sized for a firm one-hand grip. Made in Italy by Prandi, a long-established maker of axes, hatchets and coopering tools, this is a genuine cooper's-pattern working tool rather than a display piece — suited to barrel and stave work, general estate use, or anyone wanting a compact, well-balanced hand tool for shaping hardwood.
