The Warren Cutlery Fishtail Gouge is a hand-forged woodcarving tool with a #3 sweep and a 7/16in cutting width, made in the USA. A #3 sweep is a shallow, near-flat curve, so the blade takes a gentle, controlled bite rather than a deep scoop, making it suited to smoothing, levelling and low-relief work rather than hollowing out. The fishtail profile is the defining feature of this gouge: the blade flares out from a narrower shank to a wider cutting edge, so it can reach into corners, recesses and tight areas that a straight-sided gouge cannot get into without the shank fouling the surrounding wood. At 3.5in long, it is supplied razor-sharp and ready to use straight from the box. It suits detail work, cleaning up flat or gently curved surfaces, and finishing passes where a shallow, controlled cut and good access into awkward spots matter more than aggressive stock removal. As with any hand-forged edge tool, it will need periodic honing to keep its edge, and is best kept dry, sheathed or covered when not in use, and stored away from other tool edges.
