Midge, Tick & Insect Clothing

Two different problems, two different answers, and it is worth knowing which one you are buying.

Midges — you need a physical barrier

Nothing you spray on will hold a Highland midge off you at dusk in July. What works is mesh fine enough that they cannot get through it, worn loose so they cannot bite through it against the skin. The Hoggs of Fife Midgemaster jacket and the SwedTeam Mosquito Anorak are both mesh garments to go over whatever you are already wearing.

Ticks — you need treated fabric and cover

Ticks come up from the vegetation onto the leg, so the priority is the ankle and lower leg. Rovince Ergoline shirts, trousers and shield socks and the SwedTeam Lynx Antibite trouser and neck gaiter are made to deal with them. Tuck trousers into socks or boots rather than leaving a gap at the ankle — that is where they get in.

Whatever you wear, check yourself properly afterwards. Treated clothing reduces the number that reach skin; it does not remove the need to look. Lyme disease is present across much of the UK and Scotland in particular, and a tick found and removed the same day is a very different proposition from one found three days later.
