The 3M Peltor HY54 is a genuine replacement hygiene kit for Peltor Optime III earmuffs (H540A-411-SV, H540B-412-SV and the helmet-mounted H540P-ESV), giving worn ear defenders a new lease of life rather than a full replacement. The kit contains two foam inserts and two sealing rings — the cushions that sit against the head and form the acoustic seal that makes the earmuffs work. Over time these compress, harden and pick up dirt and sweat, which both lets noise leak in around the edges and makes the muffs unpleasant to wear for a full day on the range or in the field. Fitting the new pads and rings takes only a few minutes with no tools, simply pressing the old ones off and the new ones on. 3M recommends replacing the cushions and foam inserts every six months of regular use, or sooner if they're visibly worn, split or hardened, to keep the Optime III performing to its rated attenuation.
