The Opinel No.8 is the best-known knife in the French maker's range and a sensible everyday folder for anyone who spends time in the field. It pairs an 8.5cm carbon steel blade with a varnished beech handle, giving you a tool that takes a very keen edge and is easy to bring back on a stone. Carbon steel sharpens readily and holds well, which suits gralloching, cutting cord, prepping kit at the larder or general camp and stalking jobs. The Virobloc safety ring, a stainless collar designed by Marcel Opinel in 1955, twists to lock the blade open while you work and can also lock it closed for safe carry. The beech handle is PEFC-certified, comfortable in the hand and protected by a tinted varnish against moisture and dirt. At roughly 45g with a closed length near 11cm, it slips easily into a pocket or pack. One point worth noting: carbon steel will discolour and can rust if left damp, so wipe and lightly oil the blade after use to keep it in good order.
