The Opinel No.9 is a full-size folding knife built on the same simple, proven pattern the French maker has produced for well over a century. Its 9cm blade is ground from X90 carbon steel, which takes a keen edge readily and is straightforward to bring back on a stone in the field, making it a sensible choice for general cutting jobs around the larder, the truck or a stalking day. The handle is shaped from varnished beech, a hard, close-grained wood that sits comfortably in the hand and stands up to regular use. Opening reveals the Virobloc locking ring, a rotating collar that secures the blade open so it cannot fold back on your fingers, and can also be turned to lock it shut for safe carry. The larger No.9 size gives you extra blade and a fuller grip over the smaller pocket models, which suits heavier tasks such as preparing game or working through cord, kindling and packaging. Bear in mind that carbon steel will patina and can spot with rust if left wet, so wipe it dry after use. Supplied as the knife only, without a sheath.
