This page covers daylight optical monoculars, mainly the Hawke Endurance ED in 8x25, 10x25, 8x42 and 10x42, plus replacement lens covers and a small carry case. Thermal monoculars are a different thing – they are in night vision and thermal.
When a monocular makes sense
A monocular is for a quick look: checking a beast before you get the binoculars up, reading a sign, or keeping something in the pocket on days you would otherwise take nothing. For long glassing of a hillside, binoculars win every time – two eyes tire much less than one. See binoculars.
Choosing
- 25mm vs 42mm objective – the 25s fit a shirt pocket; the 42s gather more light for dawn and dusk and are the ones to take stalking.
- 8x vs 10x – 10x brings the subject closer but shows every shake of the hand. 8x is easier to hold steady and gives a wider view.
Replacement objective and eyepiece covers are listed for the 25mm and 42mm models. The rest of the Hawke range is in Hawke Optics.
