The Hornady Varmint 55-grain .224 SP SX (Spire Point Super eXplosive) is a classic varmint-hunting bullet for handloaders, built on the original standard that Joyce Hornady established for reliable small-calibre pest control. The spire point profile and flat-base design produce a streamlined shape that delivers flat trajectories, while the thin copper jacket — manufactured to match-grade tolerances via Hornady's AMP (Advanced Manufacturing Process) — produces rapid, explosive expansion even when impact velocities are on the lower end. This makes the SX well suited to cartridges like .223 Rem and .22-250 Rem in rifles with slower twist rates, and it performs reliably across the wide range of chamberings that have made the 55-grain .224 bullet a staple of British varmint shooting. Lead-core construction with a copper jacket delivers the terminal performance needed for foxing, rabbiting and other field work. Sold as component projectiles for handloading — no case, primer or propellant included.
