The Illinois River Fallow Deer Grunt is a purpose-built calling aid for stalkers and deer managers targeting fallow bucks. Made from cedar wood with a closed-reed design, it reproduces the grunt of a fallow buck to draw in a wary animal that might otherwise hang back in cover. It is particularly useful during the rut, when bucks are vocal and responsive to a rival's call, giving the user a way to provoke a reaction or bring a cautious deer within range. The closed-reed construction means it needs very little practice to get a convincing sound — a steady breath through the call is enough to produce a consistent grunt, so it suits both newcomers to calling and experienced stalkers who want a reliable, low-maintenance call in the bag. Compact and simple to carry on a lanyard or in a pocket, it is a straightforward addition to a fallow deer stalking kit alongside decoys, optics and the usual fieldcraft. As with all deer calling, it should be used responsibly and in line with the relevant close seasons and code of practice for deer management.
