The Hornady ELD-X® (Extremely Low Drag – eXpanding) 220 grain .308" component bullet is a heavy-for-calibre handloading projectile delivering all-range hunting performance from 30-calibre cartridges with sufficient case capacity, such as the .300 Winchester Magnum and .300 PRC. It is a component projectile for reloaders — not loaded ammunition — and does not require a firearms certificate to purchase in the UK. The 220 grain weight maximises sectional density for deep penetration, making it well suited to larger stalking quarry at extended ranges. Hornady's Heat Shield® tip resists aerodynamic heating during flight, maintaining a consistent meplat and the highest-in-class ballistic coefficient as verified by Doppler radar. The streamlined secant ogive with optimum boattail and highly concentric AMP® bullet jackets deliver match-accurate consistency at the handloading bench. On impact within conventional ranges (0–400 yards), the bullet expands continuously with 50–60% weight retention via the InterLock® ring. Beyond 400 yards, the Heat Shield® tip drives rearward to initiate expansion, producing a large mushroom and 85–90% retained weight for reliable terminal performance.
