The Hornady ELD-X (Extremely Low Drag – eXpanding) is an all-range hunting bullet for handloaders, combining match-grade ballistic performance with reliable terminal expansion at every practical hunting distance. At 270 grains and .338 diameter, this is a substantial projectile well suited to large and heavy game at extended ranges. Doppler-radar-verified ballistic coefficients are maintained throughout the bullet's flight thanks to the Heat Shield® tip, which is immune to aerodynamic heating and retains its shape from muzzle to target. A streamlined secant ogive, optimum boattail, and highly concentric AMP® bullet jackets work together for superior aerodynamic efficiency. At conventional 0–400-yard impact velocities the bullet expands continuously, with the thick jacket shank and InterLock® ring retaining 50–60% of bullet weight. Beyond 400 yards, where velocity drops, the Heat Shield® tip is driven rearward into the bullet to initiate expansion, delivering a large mushroom and 85–90% weight retention for deep penetration and wide wound channels. Sold as component projectiles for handloading; no firearms certificate is required to purchase component bullets in the UK.
