Hornady's FTX (Flex Tip eXpanding) bullet was developed to bring tipped-bullet performance to lever-action firearms and high-velocity handguns where soft or hollow-point designs struggle. This 45 calibre (.452" diameter) 250-grain FTX suits 450 Bushmaster loads and uses a patented Flex Tip: a soft polymer tip that compresses into the bullet on impact, triggering immediate and reliable expansion across a wide range of velocities. Crucially, the tip is safe to load in tubular magazines — no risk of the point of one round detonating the primer of the cartridge ahead. The one-piece, high-antimony lead core is mechanically locked to the jacket via an InterLock ring, controlling expansion and maximising weight retention for deep penetration on large or heavily boned game. A ballistically efficient secant ogive — a profile pioneered by Hornady — delivers a flat trajectory and impressive accuracy at extended ranges, while a reinforced jacket over the bullet shank works with the InterLock design to keep things consistent from shot to shot.
