The .500/416 Nitro Express is a classic British double-rifle cartridge from the golden era of African and Indian big-game hunting — a large, straight-tapered rimmed case originally loaded with cordite and designed to stop dangerous game at close quarters. Today it remains chambered in high-quality English-style double rifles and some bolt actions, where handloading is often the most practical way to source consistent ammunition in such a specialist calibre. Hornady's unprimed brass for the .500/416 Nitro Express is made to the same exacting standards as the rest of the Hornady brass range: produced in smaller lots, with tight controls on wall concentricity and wall thickness to ensure consistent bullet seating and a uniform release on firing.
