It sticks to the back of a phone or phone case and gives the magnetic connection the adapters need to hold the phone steady over the eyepiece — the magnets themselves sit in the adapter, not on the plate. Made from a proprietary material, it's built not to block wireless charging or phone signal, so the phone keeps charging normally with the plate fitted.
