Calls for the roe rut in high summer and the red stag roar in autumn.
- Roe — the Buttolo Blatter rubber bellows is the standard, and the easiest to get a convincing note from. The Hubertus Roe Call 3 in cherrywood gives variable pitch for imitating both doe and kid, and Buttolo also make a double reed version.
- Red — the Hubertus two-piece collapsible stag call and the Illinois River reed mouth call, for roaring during the rut.
Calling works best in the peak of the rut, and less is usually more — overcalling moves more deer away than it brings in. A buck that hangs up out of sight has probably heard something not quite right.
