Getting the length right
Lace length follows the eyelet count, not the boot size, and buying short is the mistake almost everyone makes once.
- Shoes and low cuts: 60-100cm.
- Mid-height walking and work boots: 120-140cm.
- Tall stalking and hill boots with hooks to the top: 180-220cm. The Meindl 200cm and 220cm exist because the Dovre-height boots genuinely need them.
Round, flat or waxed
- Round runs freely through hooks and is easier to tension in two zones - snug over the instep, firm at the ankle - which is how you stop the heel lifting on a descent.
- Flat holds a knot better and is the usual pattern on shoes and lighter boots.
- Waxed resists wet and grit and stays tied, at the cost of running stiffer through the eyelets.
Carry a spare in the rucksack. A lace that breaks four miles out turns a good day into a limp home, and it costs nothing to avoid.
