- Component projectile for handloading — .308" diameter, 178 grains, all-range hunting bullet
- Heat Shield tip resists aerodynamic heating, maintaining Doppler-verified BC across the full trajectory
- At 0–400 yards: progressive expansion with 50–60% weight retention via InterLock ring and thick jacket shank
- Beyond 400 yards: Heat Shield tip initiates expansion with large mushroom and 85–90% weight retention
- Secant ogive, optimum boat tail and concentric AMP jacket deliver match-grade accuracy
- InterLock ring locks core and jacket together to prevent separation during penetration
- Suited to .308 Win, .30-06, .300 Win Mag and similar .308" centrefire deer stalking cartridges
The Hornady ELD-X (Extremely Low Drag – eXpanding) in .308" diameter, 178 grains is a component projectile for handloaders who want a single hunting bullet that performs reliably from close-range woodland shots out to extended distances. The Heat Shield tip is immune to aerodynamic heating during flight, so the ballistic coefficient — verified by Doppler radar — remains consistent across the full trajectory. At conventional ranges (0–400 yards), the high-velocity impact causes the bullet to expand progressively, with the thick jacket shank and InterLock ring keeping core and jacket together for around 50–60% weight retention and deep penetration. At extended ranges beyond 400 yards, where velocity has dropped, the Heat Shield tip drives rearward into the hollow-point cavity to reliably initiate expansion, delivering a large mushroom with 85–90% weight retention. The streamlined secant ogive, optimum boat tail and concentric AMP jacket combine for accuracy that rivals dedicated match bullets. Sold as component bullets for handloading — not loaded ammunition. No firearms certificate required to purchase in the UK.
