The Hornady SST (Super Shock Tip) is a component bullet for handloaders, sold in boxes of 100. Designed for 7mm/.284" calibre rifles and weighing 162 grains, it combines a hard polymer tip with a lead core and gilding-metal jacket to deliver rapid, controlled expansion on impact. The tip acts as a wedge, driving into the core to initiate expansion at higher velocities while the mid-body cannelure locks the core and jacket together during the loading crimp. Hornady's InterLock ring is a mechanical band moulded into the jacket that bonds core to jacket throughout expansion, maintaining bullet integrity and maximising weight retention for reliable penetration. The secant ogive profile and boattail base reduce drag and improve stability in flight, making this a flat-shooting, accurate choice for deer stalking and medium-to-large game. The 162gr weight suits 7mm cartridges where a heavier, higher-BC projectile is wanted for longer shots across open ground.
