Acme 576 Shepherd's Mouth Plastic Whistle Black

The Acme 576 is a plastic shepherd's mouth whistle, the in-mouth design that generations of sheepdog and gundog handlers have relied on for clear, carrying commands in the field. Made in England by Acme, the long-established Birmingham whistle maker, it sits on the tongue with the curved open edge facing outwards, leaving a gap underneath. By varying the blow and moving the tongue to widen or narrow that gap, the handler produces a wide range of tones, pips and a rising crescendo, the kind of varied, in-tune communication that suits working a dog at distance over hills and rough ground. There is no fixed mouthpiece to hold, so both hands stay free for the lead, gun or crook, and the lightweight plastic body shrugs off wet, muddy conditions. It takes a little practice to master, but once learnt it gives a versatility a fixed-pitch whistle cannot match.
