The Acme 576 is a shepherd's mouth whistle, sometimes called the Shepherd's Lip Whistle, in a yellow plastic body. Unlike a finger whistle that you blow through, this one sits inside the mouth: you rest it on the tongue with the curved open edge facing out, leave a gap underneath, and blow across it. By raising and lowering the tongue to widen or close that gap you produce a wide range of notes and a rising crescendo, which is how shepherds and gundog handlers build the varied, repeatable cues that working dogs learn to read at distance. It has a pealess, ball-free construction, so there is no moving part to clog or freeze and the tone stays consistent in wet or cold weather. The plastic moulding is light, food-grade and durable enough for a season in the field on a lanyard. The 576 has long been a fixture of sheepdog and gundog training, made famous by One Man and His Dog, and the yellow here is simply the body colour. Made in England by Acme, who have produced whistles since 1870.
