Ballistol Trophy Bleaching Powder is the German-made consumable for whitening prepared deer skulls, antlers on the bone and other skeletal trophies. Once a skull has been cleaned and degreased, this powder restores it to a clean, even white and brings yellowed older mounts back to their original colour, so the antlers stand out against a bright skull rather than a dull, stained one. It is mixed with cold water to make a bleaching solution: dissolve the powder, place the skull or bone in the bath, heat it slowly to the boil and then let it cool. After roughly fifteen hours the part is rinsed off with clean water, and the process can be repeated if the bone is not yet white enough. The same method works equally well on biology specimens and study skeletons. After heating, the spent solution contains only mineral salts and can be disposed of through the domestic drains.
