The Hornady Lock-N-Load Modified Case for 224 Valkyrie is a reloading measurement tool that works with the Hornady Lock-N-Load Overall Length (OAL) Gauge (sold separately). It is not ammunition. Manufactured to SAAMI specifications, the modified case has a threaded neck that threads onto the LNL OAL Gauge. The handloader seats a bullet into the modified case, chambers the assembly in their 224 Valkyrie rifle, and the gauge reads the distance from the cartridge head to where the bullet contacts the rifling lands. This gives the true maximum OAL for that specific chamber — a starting point for setting seating depth with precision. Knowing the lands distance is particularly valuable with the 224 Valkyrie, which is popular for long-range shooting where fine-tuning bullet seating can have a measurable effect on group size. Because chamber dimensions vary between manufacturers and individual rifles, measurements taken in one rifle do not transfer to another. One modified case per calibre is required.
