The Gerber Cortex Compact is a pocket-sized flashlight built around Gerber's Omnivore technology, so it runs equally well on a single AA or CR123 battery — handy if you need to borrow batteries from another bit of kit in a pinch. Up to 145 lumens on the high setting, with low and strobe modes also available, all controlled by a simple tailcap switch at the base of the torch. The anodised aluminium body carries an IPX7 waterproof rating, so it shrugs off driving rain and a dunking, while an integrated pocket clip keeps it close to hand on a jacket or trouser pocket rather than buried at the bottom of a bag. At just over 2oz it disappears into a pocket, making it a sensible back-up light for checking traps, reading a map after dark, or finding your way back to the vehicle at the end of a stalk.
