Serious rimfire shooters know that brass varies from round to round, and rim thickness is one of the variables that affects how consistently a cartridge ignites. The Hornady Lock-N-Load 17-22 Rim Thickness Gauge lets you sort ammunition by rim thickness so each batch shares similar ignition characteristics, which tightens groups on the target and the quarry. It clamps onto your own caliper and uses supplied bushings to measure most .17 and .22 rimfire rounds, including .17 Mach 2, .22 Short, .22 Long and .22 Long Rifle. An additional bushing converts the gauge to read .17 HMR and .22 WMR. A safety lanyard is included to stop a live round being dropped during measuring. Note that the gauge is not compatible with .17 WSM. This is the same batch-sorting method used by competitive target shooters and dedicated varmint hunters chasing every last bit of accuracy, and it is well worth the effort if you shoot a rimfire for foxing, rabbiting or precision rimfire competition.
