The Prandi Traditional Style Adze is a hewing tool, distinct from an axe in that its cutting edge sits at right angles to the handle rather than in line with it. Rather than chopping, it is swung towards the user to shave and dress a timber face flat, or to hollow out wood — the technique used for carving bowls, troughs and dugout canoes in traditional green-woodworking and bushcraft. This model carries a 700g head on an 18cm handle of untreated ash, a wood valued for its strength and shock absorption under repeated blows. The head is supplied unfinished, so the bevel and cutting edge can be ground and profiled by the user to their own preference before first use — standard practice with Prandi's traditionally-patterned tools.
