Tick-Proof Comfort, Built for the Way You Actually Use the Outdoors
Ticks are no longer a niche concern — they're a year-round reality for anyone who steps off the tarmac. Cases of Lyme disease in the UK have risen sharply over the last decade, and ticks are now active in every county, in every season but the deepest winter. They don't bite from above. They wait at grass-tip height for an unsuspecting calf, ankle or cuff to brush past — which is exactly why your lower leg is the single most important area to protect.
The BushWear No Tick Boot Socks were designed around that simple fact.
How They Work — Repellent Bonded Into the Fibre
We started with a high-performance Thermolite hunting sock and used a Portuguese-pioneered nanotechnology process to permanently bond a tick and insect repellent (Ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate, also known as IR3535 / Si Repel) directly into the fabric structure. The treatment is not sprayed onto the surface — it's chemically bound to the fibres themselves. That means it doesn't rub off on your skin, doesn't wash out after a few cycles, and keeps performing for up to 100 wash cycles per pair.
For most users, that's two to three full hunting or hiking seasons of permanent, hands-off tick and insect protection — a fraction of the cost-per-wear of repellent sprays you have to reapply every few hours.
Comfort You'll Forget You're Wearing
Repellency is only half the job. A sock you can't bear to wear on a 12-hour stalk or a long forest walk is a sock that ends up at the back of the drawer.
- 78% Thermolite polyester — lightweight, exceptionally warm for its weight, with hollow-core fibres that wick sweat away from the foot
- 12% polyester — for durability and shape retention wash after wash
- 10% Lycra fibre — for an elasticated, supportive fit that hugs the arch and ankle without slipping
- Long boot-sock cut — sits well above the ankle bone for full coverage under boots and gaiters, with no skin gap for ticks to find
The result: warm in cold weather, breathable when you're working hard, fast-drying after wet crossings, and gentle enough to be worn straight against the skin all day.
Sizing & Fit — An Honest Note
These are a streamlined, athletic-cut boot sock — built to sit smoothly inside hunting boots, walking boots and wellingtons without bulk or pressure points. The leg is purposefully snug to prevent ride-down inside tall footwear.
- Large — UK 8–10 (EU 44–45)
- X-Large — UK 11–12 (EU 46–47)
If you have a particularly broad or muscular calf, we'd recommend sizing up. Customers with average calf circumference report an excellent, secure fit.
Who They're For
Anyone whose lower legs spend time in long grass, bracken, woodland edge, moorland or wet ground:
- Deer stalkers, gamekeepers, wildfowlers and shooters
- Hikers, hill walkers and Munro baggers
- Trail runners, fell runners and orienteers
- Dog walkers and dog handlers
- Anglers and ghillies
- Foresters, rangers, ecologists and conservation volunteers
- Gardeners, smallholders and allotment keepers
- Families on countryside holidays
Care Instructions
Machine wash up to 40°C with similar colours. Do not use fabric softener (it can coat the treated fibres). Tumble dry on low or air dry. No re-spraying or re-treating required — protection lasts the life of the treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are the No Tick Boot Socks safe to wear next to skin? A: Yes. The active repellent (IR3535) is one of the most widely used and well-studied insect repellents in the world, approved for direct skin contact in many leading topical repellents. In these socks it's bonded into the fibre and not designed to leach onto the skin.
Q: Will the repellent wear off? A: The treatment is rated for approximately 100 wash cycles. After that, the socks remain a high-quality Thermolite boot sock — they simply lose the repellent function.
Q: Do they repel anything other than ticks? A: Yes. The same active also deters midges and mosquitoes — particularly useful for Highland stalkers and West Coast walkers.
Q: Will they fit inside wellington boots and walking boots? A: Yes. The streamlined cut is specifically designed for boot use and won't bunch under tongue or laces.
Q: Are they suitable for women? A: Absolutely — sizing is unisex by UK foot size. Many female stalkers, hikers and gamekeepers wear and recommend them.
Q: What about children? A: We currently offer adult sizes only. For children we recommend treating their existing socks with BushWear NO Tick Wash-In Repellent.
Q: Can I treat my other socks the same way? A: Yes — our BushWear NO Tick Wash-In Repellent lets you add similar protection to existing trousers, socks and outer layers in a normal wash cycle.
