The Gehmann 579 Cylindrical Lens System is a purpose-built astigmatism corrector for target shooters, designed to fit onto a Gehmann rearsight iris in place of prescription shooting spectacles. Astigmatism sufferers have traditionally had to rely on shooting frames, which cannot adapt to the small day-to-day, or even hour-to-hour, changes in eyesight that come with fatigue or blood sugar levels — a problem that leaves many shooters chasing poor scores out of frustration. The 579 addresses this at the sight itself: its axis is set against rim markings from 0 to 180 degrees and locked in place with three Allen screws, while sphere correction is dialled in with two matched, opposing levers, giving fine adjustment across a 0-2% range that covers around 90% of astigmatism sufferers (a coarser 579-4 version covers the rest). Paired with a Gehmann magnifying diopter, it can correct spherical short- or long-sightedness at the same time, effectively replacing a full prescription shooting frame. Fitting requires the correct Gehmann adaptor for your iris model and the iris's original U-spanner to part-dismantle it; comprehensive assembly and user instructions are included. It is not eligible for ISSF competition, as the rules do not permit lenses in the sight.
