The Gehmann 579-I is a small precision adaptor that lets you fit Gehmann's 579 cylindrical lens system onto a compatible rearsight iris, rather than buying a whole new iris unit. It is internally threaded to pick up your existing iris's own front thread, so the 579 lens locks straight onto the sight you already use. The 579-I variant is matched specifically to the 566, 566-R, 566-S, 567, 570, 570-R and PH570 irises — check your iris model before ordering, as Gehmann also sells 579-II and 579-III versions for other iris ranges. The 579 lens itself provides cylindrical correction for astigmatism without magnification, keeping the target picture the same size right across its dioptre adjustment range, which is why serious ISSF target rifle shooters carry one as part of their sight set-up. On its own the 579-I does nothing more than the fitting job described here — it is a connector, not a lens or a complete iris — but for a shooter who already owns a compatible Gehmann iris and needs the 579 lens on it, it is the only way to make the two parts mate correctly.
