The Hornady Sub-X (Subsonic — eXpanding) bullet in .458 calibre, 410 grains, is a component reloading projectile purpose-built to deliver controlled expansion at velocities below the speed of sound. The lead core is enclosed in a gilding metal jacket with long grooves that work in concert with the bullet's flat profile and patented Flex Tip insert — seated within the hollowpoint cavity — to initiate reliable upset from as low as 900 fps. This makes the Sub-X an excellent choice for handloaders developing suppressed or subsonic loads for lever-action, straight-wall cartridge or pistol-calibre carbine rifles chambered in .45-70, .458 SOCOM or similar. Cannelures on the jacket provide a positive case crimp and reduce the risk of bullet set-back when cycling through gas-system or semi-automatic actions.
