It is not ammunition — the modified case threads onto the OAL Gauge so that you can insert the assembly into your rifle's chamber and measure the exact distance from the case head to the rifling lands. That measurement is the key to dialling in bullet seating depth for your specific barrel, tightening groups and extracting the full accuracy potential of your .338 Win Mag reload. The case is manufactured to SAAMI specifications for the .338 Winchester Magnum cartridge, and its neck is specially prepared to hold a standard-diameter bullet concentrically, giving a consistent datum point every time.
