David Tulloch Reviews: MaxBox Magnetic Gun Rest

You regularly get to read Bushwear's own opinion on products, but we'd be remiss if we didn't ackowledge that every retailer is a little bit biased towards their own products. That's why we've enlisted the help of real customers from all shooting disciplines to review the goods we sell in a real environment. This week, David Tulloch gives us his thoughts on the MaxBox Magnetic Gun Rest. If you'd like to be featured on our blog and social media, drop an example review to marketing@bushwear.co.uk.

This rest is constructed from an industrial strength foam with powerful magnets installed so that it can be used on the bonnet or the roof of your car. The documentation advises that once placed on the metal surface of your vehicle it can withstand up to 40mph. The unit is extremely weatherproof and its light weight renders it particularly versatile.

The foam block also has inserts cut outs to fit a variety of stocks changing both the position and the size just by rotating the box. I used this today both on the range and while shooting rabbits in the field and I think it is a great tool if you’re a serious target/off the rest shooter. I used it to replace a rear stock sack for checking the zero of my .270 Browning A-Bolt and it performed very well, allowing me to accurately check the zero of my rifle very quickly and taking away all shooter errors. I also tried it out using the fore end of the stock balanced on it with similar effects, giving me added confidence that it would perform if I had to use it while not having a bipod on my rifle. I have to say if you do have a bipod on your rifle it is best to use the MaxBox as a rear support instead of a fore end support as the weight of the bipod and moderator do combine to make things a little awkward.

My wife, however, tried this out and found it rather annoying when trying to get comfortable and found it really hard to get used to, though she did admit that this was not her style of shooting. I find the versatility of the MaxBox to be very convenient and with its weight being virtually unnoticeable it definitely replaces those heavy expensive bench rests that you get and with no setup time this just adds to its versatility. I found that this was easy to store in your vehicle and would happily replace a bipod when shooting around your car.

For £59.99 this is much cheaper than those bench rests you just buy for the range and with the added fact that you can use this almost everywhere with no hassle at all it is probably worth far more to a shooter. The price also is not far off  buying a manufactured front and rear sandbag set up.
