How To Use O'Tom Tick Hooks

Ask any gamekeeper or deer stalker and you will find they almost always have a story (or two) to share with you regarding ticks whilst out trudging through the rich environments of the outdoors. Unlike midges, ticks are actually tiny arachnids commonly found in woodland areas that feed on the blood of mammals, unfortunately this also includes humans.

These pesky critters can cause the spread of Lyme Disease, which has become a well documented and increasing concern in the UK. Lyme Disease is a common bacterial infection that can spread to humans or animals by infected ticks. Once attached to a source, they can often go unnoticed and remain feeding for several days before dropping off. The longer a tick is in place, the higher the risk of passing on infection. The earliest and most common symptom of Lyme Disease (which over time can affect your skin, joints, heart and nervous system) is a pink or red expanding rash which develops around the area of the bite. This can develop from between 3 to 30 days and is often described as a bull’s eye on a dartboard.  Sufferers tend to develop flu like symptoms such as headaches, tiredness, fever and muscle and joint ache.

So on discovering a tick, be it on your body or your beloved pet, what’s the fastest and safest way to discard of them? Well let’s just say it’s not your nose hair tweezers.

What are O'Tom Tick Hooks?

This small green hook was originally developed in France in 1994, and since then it has taken the world by storm, aiming to remove ticks one by one. It is now available in over 30 countries making it one of the most effective and efficient tools for tick removal, whilst also minimizing the risk of Lyme’s disease and babesiosis. The product comes with two hooks, one medium and one large for different size ticks.

Why use them?

  • It doesn’t leave the tick’s rostrum in the skin. Otherwise known as the tick’s head which is covered with backward pointing spikes that allow ticks to ‘anchor’ into the skin.

  • It doesn’t squeeze the abdomen which could cause a saliva back flow which may lead to infection.

  • It removes ticks of any size.

  • It can remove ticks from people and animals.

  • There is no need to use any chemical products which again may cause saliva regurgitation.

  • It’s a quick, painless and safe way to completely remove any ticks.

  • The product is extremely unbreakable, hard wearing and indefinitely reusable.

  • They are small enough to fit in your pocket or rucksack in case of emergencies.

A tick should always be removed correctly. Do not squeeze, burn or use your fingers or your wife’s eyebrow tweezers to pull it off.

Instructions for Use?

1. Choose the most suitable hook according to the size of the tick.

2. Engage the hook by approaching the tick from the side until it is held.

3. Lift the hook very lightly and turn it. The tick will detach by itself after 2-3 rotations

4. After removing the tick, we recommend disinfecting the bite area with an antiseptic wipe, just as an added precaution!
