Napier Silensave - Prolonging The Life of Your Moderator

Taking care of your firearm is exceptionally important; it prolongs the firearm's life, ensures reliability and helps to retain accuracy.  The same also applies to your moderator; establishing a cleaning routine for both your firearm and moderator that suits your frequency of shooting is paramount to long term firearm care and, above all, safety.  Failure to take care of your moderator can have devastating effects and can even be dangerous.  In ignoring the maintenance of your moderator you run the risk of it failing you long before it should.  Thankfully, Napier has just released a little gem which will make taking care of your moderator easier than even before...

We would like to introduce you all to Napier's SilenSave, a simple yet effective chemical that is sprayed directly into either end of the moderator prior to storage. The specially formulated chemical is dispensed with a very low pressure aerosol that creates a mist within the moderator, ensuring a very fine but even coating on the internal surfaces and baffles. Nothing can prevent the condensation created within a moderator, but regular use of SilenSave will make sure that it does not lead to significant damage and greatly prolongs the life of any type or make of moderator.

SilenSave contains Napier’s VP90 corrosion inhibitor, amongst other compounds, and is carried by a specific solvent that evaporates leaving just the finest coating behind. However, this is just stage one of the SilenSave's action, as on first firing after application the extreme and immediate heat bonds the chemical to the metal surfaces almost like a ceramic coating, thus when used regularly this provides constant, tangible protection against corrosion.

SilenSave can be used with any age of moderator but is best used with a new moderator from day one. Using SilenSave with a moderator which has been used will definitely prolong its life but for best results we would recommend giving your moderator the once over and giving it a clean following these steps:

  • Remove moderator from gun and spray with Rapid Degreaser and repeat a couple of times.  Use a lot - you should see it running out of the moderator and it will likely be brown and yucky.
  • Treat with Gun Cleaning Lube immediately after step one - soak the moderator in the Gun Cleaning Lube for a prolonged period.  The best way to do this is to spray it liberally into both ends and roll it around so that the chemical gets into every baffle part, then spray again and seal it up in a plastic bag or Tupperware, and leave for 24 hours.
  • After 24 hours take it out and spray it again as rodding it with patches is actually quite useless, the stuff you want to remove will be in the recesses of the baffles.
  • You then need to blast it out with compressed air, to remove the then loosened flakes of corrosion.  If you don’t have one go to a local garage and use the tyre filler there. Tap it with a wooden stick before and during the air blasting to help break off the particles.  This will help to blast out unwanted particles and foreign bodies and will dry off the excess cleaner.
  • Do absolutely nothing at all for at least 48 hours.  Allow any excess cleaner to evaporate and let air move freely.
  • Test fire the gun - You will probably get a blue cloud of smoke as the excess is burned off.  Now use Silensave as directed and you will have done all you can for that moderator.

Even if you do not clean your moderator, SilenSave will help you get a little more life out of it.  When your moderator kicks the proverbial bucket and it comes time for you to purchase a new one - make sure you use SilenSave from day one.  You will get extra life out of the moderator and save yourself some money in the process. SilenSave is in stock at BushWear and ready for same day dispatch.
