- Match the crimp-point count to your hull's original factory pattern for best results
The Hornady Crimp Starter 12 Gauge 6-Point is a shotshell reloading press accessory used to initiate the fold crimp on reloaded 12-gauge hulls. It fits the crimp-start station on a compatible shotshell press and operates as part of the normal loading cycle, pressing into the open hull mouth to reform the six crimp folds and create a centred starting point before the final crimp stage. The 6-point configuration produces six fold segments rather than the eight used in the 8-point version, and the choice of 6-point versus 8-point typically depends on the original crimp pattern of the hull being reloaded. Reusing the same fold count as the factory crimp generally gives the cleanest finished result. A properly started crimp prevents the hull mouth from wandering off-centre during the final close, which is what separates a clean, well-sealed shotshell from one that risks opening or sealing unevenly in the chamber.
