The Hornady Lock-N-Load Modified Case for 300 Blackout is a reloading measurement tool — not a cartridge you load with powder and a primer. It is designed for use with the Hornady Lock-N-Load Overall Length (OAL) Gauge (sold separately) and lets handloaders measure the exact distance from the cartridge head to the rifling lands inside their own 300 BLK rifle or upper. The modified case is manufactured to SAAMI specifications and features a threaded neck that accepts the LNL OAL Gauge. You seat a bullet in the modified case, chamber the assembly, and the gauge reads the precise maximum OAL for that chamber. This is especially relevant for 300 Blackout loads, where the wide range of available projectiles — from lightweight supersonic hunting bullets to heavy subsonic bullets designed to function with a moderator — can each have very different optimal seating depths. Knowing your lands distance lets you tailor seating depth to each bullet you work with. One modified case per calibre is required.
