The Hornady Lock-N-Load OAL Gauge Curved is the reloader's benchmark for measuring true overall cartridge length and the critical distance from the case mouth to the rifling lands. Designed for bolt-action, single-shot, autoloader, lever-action, and pump-action rifles, the curved body allows insertion through the ejection port so you can chamber the modified case and measure directly in your own rifle rather than using a generic reference. To use it, thread a calibre-matched Modified Case (sold separately) onto the gauge, then push a bullet of the same type and weight you intend to seat through the modified case until it touches the rifling — the gauge reads the distance to an accuracy of 0.001 inch. Because you are using your actual bullet in your actual chamber, the result reflects the true jump to the lands for your specific barrel and throat wear. This method outperforms tools that rely on a simulated bullet with an arbitrary ogive shape. Note: not compatible with Adapter D or short-bodied cases such as the 22 Hornet (which requires the dedicated 71309 adapter kit). Modified Cases are sold separately by calibre.
