Smith's 6" DualGrit Fine Whetstone is a two-sided bench sharpening stone built for finishing a knife edge rather than starting one from scratch. One face carries a 400-grit medium abrasive for setting the edge, while the other is a 1,000-grit fine face for polishing and refining it to a keen finish, so both stages live in a single stone. The synthetic aluminium oxide abrasive holds a flat face well and copes with both single- and double-bevel blades. At 6" x 1.75", it's compact enough for a kit bag but large enough for proper bench work, and it sits in a moulded plastic base with a fitted lid. That lid doubles as a base extension: pushed into the bottom of the base, it raises the stone and lets the user grip lower down, keeping fingers well clear of the blade as it's drawn across the surface. Use it dry with a proper honing fluid such as Smith's own honing solution rather than soaking it in water, for a smoother glide and a cleaner cut.
