The Trap Man Larsen Central Decoy is a three-compartment live-catch cage trap designed specifically for magpie control. The central compartment houses the decoy bird — a live magpie whose presence triggers the territorial instincts of neighbouring birds — while two flanking catch sections sit on either side, each with a spring-loaded top-entry door held open by a split perch. When an incoming magpie lands on the perch to investigate the intruder, the perch collapses under its weight and the door snaps shut, catching the bird humanely without harm. Built from galvanised welded wire mesh, the trap measures 46 inches long by 15 inches wide by 16 inches tall overall. Under UK law the decoy bird must be provided with food, water, shelter and sufficient room to stretch its wings, and the trap must be inspected at least once every 24 hours. A general licence is required to operate a Larsen trap in England and Wales for the purpose of conserving wild birds or preventing serious damage to crops. Best results come from setting during the pre-breeding season when magpies are at their most territorial.
