Waxed cotton jackets, coats and hats lose their water resistance over time as the wax finish dries out and the fabric weathers — this dressing brings that finish back. Hoggs of Fife's wax-based dressing reproofs and renovates waxed cotton clothing, restoring the key elements that fade with age and use. Worked into the fabric, it nourishes the cotton with fresh wax, freshening the garment's appearance while preventing the material from drying out and cracking along seams and creases. The result is a garment that once again sheds rain and wind as it should. It's easiest to apply once slightly warmed, so the wax spreads evenly with a cloth; a hairdryer on a low setting can help soften stubborn patches before working it in. Supplied in a 100ml tin in a neutral shade that won't alter the colour of the garment, it's a straightforward bit of kit for keeping a wax jacket or overtrousers going for years, rather than replacing them once the original finish wears through.

Wax that works

2 small tins for small stockman coat. Tad left over after complete coverage with soft cloth. Given the re-waxed coat an airing in heavy rain and dry as a bone. No leaking at seams making sure to work the wax along stitching

Hoggs dressing for waxed cotton

My jacket is tan in colour and 18 years old. It’s never treated so one tin only covered two thirds of the jacket. It looks very patchy even after trying to spread it out using a hair dryer. But I have bought a second tin to finish it off and hopefully it won’t be as patchy.
