Laporte invented the midi sporting clay, and this is the genuine article: a 90mm black target supplied in a box of 160. The midi is noticeably smaller than a standard clay, which makes it a proper test of a shooter's eye. Off the trap arm it is quicker than a standard target in the early part of its flight, and as the most aerodynamic of the domed clays it holds its speed and line for longer, slowing later than a standard would. The real trick, though, is the optical illusion: because the midi reads like a full-size clay further out, shooters tend to judge extra distance and give it more lead than it needs, which is exactly why course setters love it. The black finish is a popular choice for driven presentations in sporting layouts, and at longer ranges a tighter choke earns its keep.
