The Barnes Varmin-A-Tor is a 6mm (.243in diameter), 72 grain reloading bullet built specifically for varmint and predator control, supplied 100 to the box for handloaders rather than as loaded ammunition. It uses a flat-base hollow point design with a scored nose cavity and Barnes' explosive DETON-A-TOR core, so the thin, tapered copper jacket fragments violently on impact rather than penetrating deep, giving fast, humane despatch of foxes, crows and other varmints without the pass-through risk of a tougher hunting bullet. With a ballistic coefficient of 0.208 and a sectional density of 0.174, it is a purpose-built varmint projectile rather than a big-game bullet, and should be loaded to published Barnes data for 6mm/.243in cartridges. As a component bullet it needs seating in prepared brass with a suitable primer and propellant charge to the handloader's own recipe - it is not a finished cartridge and cannot be fired as supplied. A straightforward, effective choice for anyone loading their own varmint ammunition and wanting reliable, explosive fragmentation on small pest species.
