One face carries a coarse grit for taking a dull or damaged edge back to a working bevel, the other a fine grit for finishing to a razor edge; each side is colour-coded and clearly labelled so you can tell them apart at a glance. Both surfaces are made from multiple layers of micron-sized monocrystalline diamonds set into an interrupted, holed pattern that collects metal filings as you work rather than letting them clog the grit.
