Sierra's Varminter is a proven component bullet for handloaders shooting the 22 Hornet, 22 K-Hornet and 218 Bee, and this is the 40 grain, .223in diameter version supplied in a box of 100. It uses a thin jacket over a soft lead core in a traditional round-nose profile, giving reliable expansion on small varmints at the modest muzzle velocities these cartridges produce, typically 2600 to 2900 fps. Being a short bullet, it stabilises easily in the slower 1-in-16in twist barrels common to Hornet-chambered rifles, where longer, heavier bullets can struggle. The same bullet also has a following in medium-capacity cartridges such as 222 Remington and 223 Remington, where it holds together well up to around 3500 fps. This is a reloading component only, not loaded ammunition, so it is intended for handloaders working up their own varmint loads rather than for use straight from the box. A straightforward, well-proven choice for anyone loading for rimfire-replacement varmint cartridges or looking for a soft-hitting bullet for foxing and small vermin control at UK-legal ranges.
