Sierra's Varminter .224 45 grain Hornet bullets are a component bullet for handloaders, supplied unprimed and unloaded, 100 to the box. Formed with a thin jacket and soft lead core, they are built specifically for the varmint hunter loading for the 22 Hornet, 22 K-Hornet and 218 Bee, where this short, round-nose design stabilises easily in the tighter 1-in-16in twist barrels typical of those cartridges. At the modest muzzle velocities these rounds produce, roughly 2600 to 2900 fps, the thin jacket gives fast, reliable expansion on rabbits, foxes and other small quarry without excessive meat damage. The same bullet also performs well loaded in higher-capacity cases such as the 222 Remington and 223 Remington, where velocities can reach up to 3500 fps, making it a genuinely versatile choice across several varminting cartridges. Diameter is 0.224in with a jacketed soft point profile, no cannelure and no lead-free option. As with all Sierra bullets, consistency from batch to batch is the selling point, and handloaders should always work up loads carefully within safe published data for their chosen cartridge and rifle.
