The Hornady FTX (Flex Tip eXpanding) is a tipped handgun bullet engineered to make the most of the elevated velocities produced by .44 Magnum lever-action rifles. Standard hollow-point pistol bullets tend to expand too rapidly at lever-gun velocities and sacrifice penetration; the FTX solves this by replacing the hollow cavity with a soft, compressible polymer tip that is driven inward on impact, initiating immediate and controlled expansion across a broad velocity range. Critically, the tip is safe to seat in tubular magazines — eliminating the primer-strike risk that rules out traditional spitzer bullets in lever guns. The one-piece high-antimony lead core is mechanically locked to the jacket by Hornady's InterLock ring, supporting reliable weight retention and deep penetration on large, heavy-bodied game. A secant ogive profile aids ballistic efficiency and flat trajectories, while a specially engineered heavier jacket over the shank works in concert with the InterLock to manage expansion.
