Two different jobs get lumped together under hand-held lighting, and it is worth knowing which one you are buying for.
Lamping lamps
A long-range rechargeable lamp with an adjustable beam - Cluson Adjust-a-Beam AB200, ML6500 Pro Focus, Mighty Ranger and Pro-Scanner 8000, and the Clulite Clu-Briter 500. You want a wide beam to scan a field and a tight one to identify, which is what the adjustable head is for. Run time on a rechargeable pack is the figure that matters over a night out, not peak output.
Working torches
Cyclops high-output and 800 lumen LED torches, the Clulite WL-700L inspection lamp and the Gerber Cortex compact - kennel and larder jobs, checking a vehicle, following up in the dark, finding the gate.
Before you buy
- Rechargeable or cells. A rechargeable pack is cheaper to run and will let you down if you forget it. Cells are heavier and always available.
- Filters. If you are lamping foxes, the filter matters as much as the lamp. They sit with the lamping accessories.
- Mounting. A gun-mounted light is a different item from a hand lamp - see Gun Lights.
